LONDON, United Kingdom — “Seize the Opportunity and Go for Gold” was the theme of this year’s orientation event for the new UK College Degree Program for Non-Employees (CDPNE) students. Hosted at the Excel Center in London by the Professional Development Department (PDD) at Aramco Overseas Company, the two-day program covered every aspect of the challenges that lie ahead for new students.

The event provided the new CDPNE’s with information on the UK education system and cultural diversity, medical entitlements and administrative procedures, as well as the chance to personally meet their UK-based career advisors.  Mr. Ahmed Alzayyat, managing director of Aramco Overseas Company B.V. addressed the 50 new CDPNE’s and encouraged them to work hard and make the most of this opportunity.

In keeping with the theme, the students were encouraged to do exactly that; go for gold.  Filling the room with energy and enthusiasm, motivational guest speaker Mr. Action Jackson inspired the students to think positively and gave them expert advice on how to deal with difficult situations.

However it was the speeches delivered by former CDPNE's that evoked an emotional response from the new students. Salma Al-Sinan, a third-year female geophysics undergraduate at University College London, felt honored to be given the chance to share her experiences as a student in the UK. Instilling confidence in the crowd to overcome their fears and strive for excellence, Salma remarked, “I was asked a number of questions after my speech, and I’m really glad I was able to help. Having been exactly in their position three years ago, I felt I really got through to the students and reassured them in a way.”

Meanwhile Aqeel Al-Naser, a Ph.D. student from the University of Manchester, expressed to the students that the results of their hard work would take time — “It is a matter of connecting the dots,” he said. Aqeel urged the group to be patient and ready for change. His message to fellow students was clear: “Prepare for the near future, but don’t limit your sight.”

After listening intently to the words of wisdom, the students engaged in workshops relating to adaptability and change, as well as new ways of learning, in order to increase interpersonal communication. “We want to ensure we give the students support and guidance so they can focus on achieving the highest standards in their studies,” said Khaled Al-Safar, head of PDD UK office.

At present, there are more than 400 Saudi Aramco-sponsored students and employees in educational training throughout the UK and Europe.
